How to Prepare for Your First Dance Class

The first day of dance is a big moment — exciting and a little nerve-wracking, for dancers and parents alike. The good news? A little preparation goes a long way. Here's everything you need to know to make your child's first dance class in Lockport a smooth, happy success.

What to Wear to a First Dance Class

When in doubt, check your welcome email or call the studio — but here's the general rule by style:

  • Ballet: a leotard, tights, and ballet slippers; hair in a secure bun.
  • Jazz: a leotard or fitted top with leggings/shorts, and jazz shoes.
  • Tap: comfortable, fitted clothing with tap shoes.
  • Hip Hop: comfortable athletic wear and clean, indoor-only gym shoes.

Whatever the style, choose fitted clothing your child can move in — baggy clothes make it hard for instructors to see and correct alignment. Pull hair back and away from the face, and skip the jewelry.

What to Bring

  • A labeled water bottle — dancing is a workout, and hydration matters.
  • The right shoes — in a small bag, labeled with your dancer's name.
  • A positive attitude — the most important thing of all.

Leave phones, snacks, and toys at home or in the bag — a focused, distraction-free class is part of the fun.

What to Expect in Class

Most classes follow a comforting, predictable rhythm: a warm-up to get bodies moving, technique work to build skills, and choreography that's genuinely fun. Don't worry if your child doesn't get every step on day one — that's completely normal, and our instructors meet every dancer where they are. At Relevé, there's a designated area for parents to wait or observe.

How to Calm First-Day Nerves

It's totally normal for a child (or parent!) to feel butterflies. A few things that help:

  • Talk it up ahead of time — frame it as a fun adventure, not a test.
  • Arrive 10 minutes early so your child can settle in and meet the instructor before class starts.
  • Remind them that everyone is learning and mistakes are part of it.
  • Stay calm and positive yourself — kids take their cues from you.

No Experience? No Problem.

Our recreational dance classes welcome complete beginners, and we place every dancer in a class that fits their age and level. Still wondering if your child is the right age to start? Read our guide on what age kids should start dance classes.
